Shaneil Muir

Shaneil Muir was born on December 14, 1997, in Mandeville, Manchester Parish, Jamaica. Her mother is Suzette Gilburn and she was largely raised by her grandmother, an upbringing she has said shaped the candid, personal storytelling that runs through her music. She entered Jamaica's dancehall scene as an independent artist in the mid-2010s, building an early following through direct online engagement.

Her first notable single, "Proud Side Chick," drew attention for its blunt take on relationships. In 2016 she competed on the televised talent competition Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall, reaching the top five, and released the EP "Wake" in 2017. Her true breakout came with "Yamabella," a club anthem that became an instant dancehall staple.

Muir built out a catalogue of hits including "Bonnie & Clyde," "Exclusive," and "The Pain," and in 2022 recorded "Ride It" with Vybz Kartel. That same year she also released "Black Is Beautiful," a song addressing themes of Black pride and self-image. In October 2022 she collapsed from exhaustion while performing in Montego Bay, an incident widely reported in Jamaican outlets, after which she spoke publicly about needing to better manage her health and touring schedule.

Muir is regarded as one of contemporary dancehall's leading female voices for her willingness to write explicitly about sexuality, relationships and social commentary from a woman's perspective, in a lineage that includes artists like Lady Saw and Spice. As of 2026 she remains an active touring and recording artist.
