Bad Gyal Jade

Bad Gyal Jade, real name Mickala Williams, is from Old Harbour, St. Catherine, Jamaica. She grew up idolizing Jamaican greats including Lady Saw, Bob Marley, Spice, Shabba Ranks and Beres Hammond, and began her recording career as a teenager, with her music first reaching radio playlists in 2012 via the single "Bad in a Bed." She began deejaying and singjaying professionally around age 16.

Her profile rose substantially in 2016 when she collaborated with dancehall star Vybz Kartel on the single "Position," which drew rapid attention online — the collaboration most sources credit as her breakout moment.

In 2018 she placed second in the Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall competition, broadening her audience; dancehall veteran Bounty Killer publicly endorsed her as an up-and-coming artist around this period. She has cited Vybz Kartel as a direct influence and has described herself in interviews as "the female Kartel." In 2023 she released "Mixed Emotions," which she has called her biggest project to date, and in 2025 she secured a U.S. work visa, enabling her to plan debut performances in Florida, Connecticut and New York; around the same time she addressed ongoing fan confusion between herself and fellow dancehall artist Jada Kingdom, clarifying the two are separate performers.

Bad Gyal Jade positions her music at the intersection of hard-edged club dancehall and reflective, socially engaged songwriting.
