Ninjaman

Ninjaman was born Desmond John Ballentine in January 1966 in Annotto Bay, St. Mary parish, Jamaica. At about age 12 he began deejaying for the Black Culture sound system, developing the stuttering, staccato flow that would become his signature, and in 1980 joined the influential Killamanjaro sound system alongside Super Cat and Early B.

His greater impact came at the turn of the 1990s, when he became the leading voice of dancehall's 'badman' or 'gunman' era. Singles such as 'Murder Dem' and 'Permit to Bury' cemented his reputation as one of the most technically gifted deejays on the sound-system clash circuit, and he was widely credited with victories in live lyrical clashes against Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, and a young Beenie Man.

By the mid-1990s his career became increasingly overshadowed by legal trouble, including a 1999 firearm conviction and multiple arrests. His most serious legal reckoning began in March 2009, when he and his son were arrested and charged with murder. In November 2017 a jury found Ninjaman guilty, and in December 2017 he was sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility only after 25 years.

Ninjaman has consistently maintained his innocence, and an appeal hearing concluded in July 2026 with the Court of Appeal reserving judgment. As of August 2026, he remains incarcerated in Jamaica. His standing as a foundational architect of dancehall's lyrical-combat and 'badman' style remains widely acknowledged, even as that legacy is now permanently intertwined with a murder conviction.
