Dirtsman

Dirtsman, born Patrick Thompson on March 4, 1965, in Spanish Town, Jamaica, was the son of the owner of the Black Universal Sound System and the brother of fellow deejay Papa San. He began his career working with his father's sound system before joining the Willowdene-based Creation Rock Tower System, and started recording in the mid-1980s.

His breakthrough came with "Thank You" (1989), produced by Steely and Clevie, followed by his best-known hit, "Hot Dis Year" (also referenced as "Hot This Year"), produced by Bobby Digital and Philip Smart in 1992. He released one album, Acid (1991), on VP Records, alongside numerous singles issued between 1989 and 1993 across labels including Digital B, Fashion Records, and Xterminator, and had signed a recording contract with BMG that positioned him for wider international success.

On December 21, 1993, Dirtsman was shot and killed by four gunmen on the verandah of his home in Spanish Town at age 28, cutting short a career many in the industry believed was on the verge of a major international breakthrough. He is remembered within Jamaican dancehall history both for his vocal talent and as one of several artists of his generation lost to gun violence; his brother Papa San has continued to pay public tribute to him.
