Peter Metro

Peter Clarke, known as Peter Metro, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, around 1960. He began his career in the late 1970s on the STATS sound system in Trench Town, initially performing under the name Peter Ranking before changing it — on discovering another deejay already used that name — to Peter Metro, after his residency on the Metromedia sound system, which he helped bring to prominence through the 1980s.

Having studied in Cuba and become fluent in Spanish, Peter Metro is acknowledged as the first multilingual reggae toaster, a distinction that earned him a substantial following in South America. His hits, including "Dedicated to You" and "Police Inna England," also built his profile in the United Kingdom and Europe.

He released five albums during the 1980s and recorded extensively with Yellowman and Fathead, including the albums Yellowman, Fathead, and Peter Metro (1982) and Live with Yellowman and Sassafrass (1984). He appeared at Reggae Sunsplash in 1987 alongside English deejay Dominic. Though he no longer records on a regular schedule, Peter Metro has continued to perform, describing himself in later interviews as one of the more consistently active veterans in the business.
