Baby Cham

Damian Beckett grew up in Waterhouse, Kingston, a district deeply associated with Jamaican sound-system and dancehall culture, and got his stage name from the contrast between his youthful, baby-faced appearance and his deep baritone voice.

He came up through the Scare Dem Crew, a group of aspiring deejays from Seaview Gardens mentored by Bounty Killer, and remained closely associated with Bounty Killer's camp as it evolved into the Alliance collective alongside artists including Vybz Kartel and Mavado. He recorded as Baby Cham through the 1990s and early 2000s before shortening his stage name to simply Cham in 2005.

His defining hit came with 2006's "Ghetto Story," the title track of his major-label debut album, an autobiographical narrative about growing up in inner-city Kingston. A remixed version featuring Alicia Keys brought the song significant international attention and remains his best-known work.

Cham has continued recording and collaborating across dancehall and hip-hop in the years since, maintaining his standing as one of the genre's respected veteran voices from the Bounty Killer-affiliated generation of the 1990s and 2000s.
