Tifa

Tifa was born Latifa Brown in Kingston, Jamaica, and grew up across a mix of settings, including uptown Kingston and time spent in the United States and Canada. Her stepfather, Sampalue, owner of Diamond Rush Records, connected her early to the music business. She chose to study at the University of the West Indies, majoring in psychology, an unusually formal educational background relative to many of her dancehall peers.

She began concentrating seriously on a music career around 2005, and early singles built her a following, but it was her 2008 single "Bottom of the Barrel" that launched her to stardom in Jamaica. Off the back of that success she toured Europe with the sound system crew Ward 21 and became the first female dancehall artist to perform in the Czech Republic.

Tifa followed with hits including "Spell It Out," continued to record steadily through the 2010s, and won multiple industry honors, including three awards at the 2014 Youth View Awards. She built a reputation beyond music as a commercial ambassador, securing major brand partnerships with BMW, Digicel, and Wisynco. She released her debut studio album, Curry Goat & Champagne, in 2018. In a 2024 DancehallMag interview she described what she characterized as sustained industry sabotage during her career, alongside separate personal hardships, including the 2017 murder of her close friend, fashion designer Dexter Pottinger.

Tifa is regarded as part of the generation of 2000s-2010s female dancehall artists who pushed the genre toward greater commercial polish and brand crossover. She relocated to rural Florida around 2019 and, according to 2024 reporting, has since launched a restaurant business while re-emerging musically with new singles, suggesting she remains active, if operating at a lower public profile than during her mid-2010s peak.
