Popcaan

Popcaan was born Andrae Sutherland on July 19, 1988, in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, and was raised largely by his mother in Portmore, St. Catherine, in a housing scheme locally known as "Gangsta City." His stage name was given to him by a close childhood friend, Scumpy, who was later killed in street violence.

In 2007, Popcaan approached Vybz Kartel — already dancehall's dominant star — at a Portmore stage show. Kartel recruited him into his Portmore Empire crew, becoming both his producer and mentor. The pairing produced Popcaan's international breakout, 2010's "Clarks," an ode to the British shoe brand that became a Caribbean anthem. Kartel's 2011 incarceration and the Portmore Empire's formal dissolution in 2012 effectively ended the two men's close working arrangement, though Popcaan has continued to credit Kartel's early mentorship as foundational.

Popcaan signed to Dre Skull's Mixpak Records and released his debut album, Where We Come From, in 2014, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and included the Drake collaboration "Where We Come From (We Caa Done)." His profile grew further through a long-running association with Drake, culminating in a December 2018 signing to Drake's OVO Sound/Warner Records, under which he released Vanquish (2019) and Fixtape (2020); his 2023 album Great Is He debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His public record includes a 2023 legal episode in which he was charged with several offenses after officers shut down his own Unruly Fest; he pleaded guilty in January 2024 and was fined.

Popcaan is widely credited with carrying dancehall's torch into the genre's global-crossover era of the 2010s and 2020s, while his "Unruly" brand and annual Unruly Fest have become fixtures of dancehall culture. As of 2026 he remains one of the genre's most commercially significant global ambassadors, touring internationally and continuing to release new music as an independent artist.
