Mr. Vegas

Clifford Smith emerged from Kingston's dancehall scene in the late 1990s, gaining early recognition with the single "Nike Air" before releasing his MOBO Award-winning album Heads High, whose title track charted on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and became one of his signature recordings.

Known for blending rapid-fire toasting with a melodic singjay style, Mr. Vegas built a wide-ranging catalogue that draws on soca, gospel, R&B, and pop influences alongside core dancehall, releasing hits such as "Hot Wuk" and "Tamale" that broadened his audience beyond Jamaica.

He has been an outspoken advocate for dancehall and reggae's place in the broader music industry, publicly criticizing artists he felt profited from Jamaican rhythms and culture without properly crediting or compensating originating artists, including a widely circulated critique of Drake's use of dancehall and Afrobeats influences, and has engaged in public disputes with other Jamaican artists over the genre's direction.

Mr. Vegas has continued releasing music into the mid-2020s, including the album Ghetto Reggae, and remains a prominent, often provocative voice on the state and future of dancehall music.
