Di Genius

Di Genius, born Stephen McGregor in Kingston, Jamaica, is a record producer, singer, and songwriter and the son of veteran reggae artist Freddie McGregor; his siblings Daniel 'Chino' McGregor and Yeshemabeth 'Shema' McGregor are also musicians. He began producing music in local studios at around age 12 and scored his first hit riddim, 'Cartoon,' in 2004 while still a student at Ardenne High School, around the time he acquired the nickname 'Di Genius' from a local DJ. Wikipedia does not record his exact birth date.

His defining early moment as a producer came in 2006, at age 15, when up-and-coming artist Mavado recorded 'Weh Dem a Do' on the 'Red Bull & Guinness' riddim, co-produced with Delly Ranx; the single was a major hit in Jamaica and charted on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Working primarily out of his Big Ship recording studio, he went on to produce and write for international artists including Sean Paul (on the 2009 album Imperial Blaze), Nelly Furtado, Shakira, Lianne La Havas, Ne-Yo, Estelle, Matisyahu, and John Legend.

In 2016, Billboard credited Di Genius as one of the producers responsible for bringing dancehall back into the mainstream, citing his work on Drake's "Controlla," from the multi-platinum album Views. He signed a songwriting deal with Warner Chappell Music in December 2019 and has received multiple Grammy nominations and wins across reggae, R&B, and Latin categories between 2009 and 2022.
